Orchids
May 2015 • Sharpie pen illustration
From the spring of 2014 through late 2015, I was deep in a botanical illustration phase. Unfortunately for me, I attempted to sell custom illustrations like this one online and completely burnt myself out. Ten years later, I’m trying to work my way back up to drawing flora again.
I drew these orchids at the height of my botanical illo era, and this particular drawing only took me an hour to complete, which I consider to be a pretty impressive feat. I drew it while listening to an audiobook of Brave New World, just an aside. There’s no correlation between the content of the book and that of this illustration; I just find it to be an interesting tidbit, if you’re into knowing what an artist was going through at the time of a piece’s creation. I originally intended for this drawing to be given to my sister, but I loved it so much that I kept it for myself. She actually doesn’t know this, and I wasn’t planning on ever telling her because I kind of feel bad. (Em, if you’re reading this, sorry but I couldn’t help it.)
